New Data Shows That 96% of Patients Using Espere Healthcare's DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing See a Reduction in Itch in Just 4 Weeks

Sales of DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing have increased dramatically following the publication of a Patien Orientated Eczema Management (POEM) study. POEM Score sheets sent in by a group of 52 DermaSilk purchasers show just how well this therapeutic clothing controls the symptoms of eczema with eczema severity, as measured by POEM decreasing 79% from 17.85 to 3.73 in 4 weeks. Itch symptoms were reduced in 96% of patients.

Bedford, United Kingdom, March 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A recent survey conducted on DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing confirms the effectiveness of the product in reducing itch associated with eczema - reports Espere Healthcare Ltd.

52 randomly chosen families who ordered DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing for eczema care via the Internet were asked to complete the Patient Orientated Eczema Measurement (POEM) questionnaire prior to starting use of the clothing and then again 4 weeks after starting use. The purpose of the study was to measure the effect of DermaSilk the clothing on their condition. The average age of the patients was 7.1 years.

The POEM scoring system is a validated measure of eczema severity recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

It is a questionnaire containing seven questions which are simple to answer and can be administered without medical supervision. The results are scored to a standard formula by an outside assessor.

The results were extremely encouraging, with 96% of the families noting a significant improvement in itching within 4 weeks with 49% reporting no itching at all.

Sleep disturbance, reported in 40 patients at the start of the study had completely disappeared in 68% of patients with 93% of patients reporting improvement over the 4 weeks.

The POEM system produces a total score which grades eczema from 28 (severe) to 0 (none). The total score for patients in the study showed a steady decline over 4 weeks from an average of 17.85 to 3.73 – a decrease of 79%. 28 patients had a POEM score of less than 4.

The POEM scoring system is a “recognised simple, valid, repeatable, and readily understandable patient-oriented assessment measure for monitoring disease activity in children and adults with atopic eczema” and “is a practical self-assessed measurement tool for monitoring aspects of atopic eczema that are important to patients in routine clinical practice or in the clinical trial setting”. [Charman. C et al. Arch Dermatol. 2004;140:1513-1519]

This small group of randomly selected patients highlights the overall effect that DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing can have on the quality of life of eczema patients.

Chris Steeples, Joint Managing Director of Espère Healthcare Ltd, the company responsible for distributing DermaSilk said “We regularly get feedback from mothers, thanking us for DermaSilk and telling us just how much it has changed their lives. Now a validated measure of eczema severity has confirmed just how much of an effect this product can have on the quality of life of not only the eczema patient but their whole family. We really do change lives! Since publishing this on our website we've seen a dramatic increase in direct sales and this is testament to the data. More eczema patients complain about itch than any other stmptom of eczema so the fact that we can show such a reduction in a short period of time shows just how well this clothing works.”
