Jewelry, jewelry, jewelry. Everyone loves it and yet many don’t know how to properly clean it. If you wear it you should read this.

So you love that newly acquired piece of Antique/ Estate jewelry? It looks clean and is in good shape so you can’t wait to pop it on and show it off to your friends. But there is a very good reason to hold of wearing it until it is cleaned. Rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets all come in contact with skin. Skin cells can very easily collect under stones, in chains & on the backs of earrings during everyday wear. We think you get the idea here, sharing skin cells is not appealing or hygienic either.

Rings are king in the jewelry world but they need cleaning more often & special attention since hand lotions & soap scum tend to build up under the setting and can cause painful skin irritations. Once a month you should remove wedding rings & rings you wear on a daily basis. Inspect them and carefully clean them to keep them sparkling and new looking.

Earrings have their own cleaning needs. Pay particular attention to where the post meets the back of the earring and clean the earring backs as well. For clips clean the back of the earring and the clip area too. Cleaning can prevent skin irritations and infections. Do not use alcohol on posts right before wearing them; it can dry out tender skin and cause irritation.

Whether you are purchasing costume or fine jewelry using the proper cleaning techniques are important to look & life of your jewelry. Diamonds may be forever but cleaning a color treated diamond with a harsh cleaner or abrasive cleaner can have a ruinous result. Learning a few simple cleaning methods will keep your jewelry looking good for years to come.

Damp Cloth

Use soft flannel cloth when possible and dampen with warm water. Gently wipe jewelry. This is good for cleaning amber, ivory, jet, opals, pearl strands, color treated diamonds and other delicate gems.

Mild Soapy Water

Soak your jewelry in a small bowl of warm water with a little mild liquid soap. Allow jewelry to soak for a few minutes only! Using a very soft brush, or a cosmetic brush (like the type used to apply eye shadow), brush gently. This works well for cleaning a pearls, lapis lazuli, coral, malachite, turquoise and similar stones. Do not soak jewelry with glued in stones, it could cause them to loosen and fall out.

Caring for Silver Jewelry

Do not wear your silver in pools that have been treated with chlorine

Clean silver with silver polishing cloths

Avoid using tissue, abrasive mediums and liquid cleaners which can damage silver jewelry

Store in a safe place, and do not sit any jewelry on counters next to sinks or drains

To help minimize tarnishing, store jewelry in airtight plastic bags or wrap in aluminum foil.

Costume Jewelry, Bridal & Diva Jewelry Cleaning

Carefully wipe your jewelry with clean, soft, damp cloth. When done dry with an absorbent cloth, be careful that it does not get caught in prong settings.

After cleaning, lay out your jewelry to dry before storing.

Do not expose to extreme heat

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners

Do not soak in water, Avoid hot water

Do not use cleaning agents or chemicals

Keep away from steam

Now all your jewelry should be sparkling for the holidays!
