Market Rates Insight Data Powers New American Banker Weekly Index of Deposit Premiums and Trend Analysis

Deposit premiums known as Specials are the marketing tools banks use to attract new deposit money, especially when deposit rates are at a record low.

San Anselmo, CA, June 05, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A new Premium Index, produced jointly by Market Rates Insight (MRI, www.marketratesinsight.com) and American Banker (www.americanbanker.com), has been added to the American Banker web site and features a weekly index of the premium paid on different terms for CDs and money market accounts. Premiums are the incremental rates paid on regular deposit products and are used primarily to attract new money to banks and credit unions. The new Premium Index, posted as American Banker’s ”Infographic: Weekly Time-Deposit Trends,” offers data from Market Rates Insight on premium pricing, as well as a weekly trend analysis on relevant topics that impact deposits.

The new online Premium Index features the additional interest rate that a depositor can gain when opting for a special promotional deposit product that the bank is offering. Currently, the trend is towards attracting longer-term deposits, so banks are offering premium rates on long-term products. For example, the highest national-average premium this week is offering a full percentage point on top of the regular rate for depositors who commit to a four-year CD.

“Premiums, in the banking industry, are the equivalent to ‘sales’ in the retail business,” said Dan Geller, Ph.D. Executive Vice President at Market Rates Insight. “They provide the flexibility to turn new business on and off, when needed, without changing the regular price of deposit products.”

The Weekly Premium Index and Trend Analysis are available to subscribers on American Banker online at www.americanbanker.com. Just search for “Infographic: Weekly Time-Deposit Trends.” Non-subscribers may view the Weekly Index by choosing “Register for a Free Trial.”

The Weekly Premium Index and Trend Analysis are part of MRI’s National Pricing Indicators and also can be viewed on Market Rates Insight’s website at http://marketratesinsight.com/new/news/research.aspx
