OAI Discusses the Effects of Adding a Driver to an Auto Insurance Policy

Los Angeles, CA, April 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- As a new FAQ published on OnlineAutoInsurance.com points out, adding drivers — especially young ones — to a policy can have a serious impact on total premiums.

Families wishing to see the best route to take when it comes to adding a younger driver to a policy can generate free car insurance quotes online to compare plans and choose the best options. Although adding a teen to a policy will almost certainly raise overall costs, a closer look shows that this route may be cheaper in the long run.

OnlineAutoInsurance.com recently conducted an analysis of this situation to see just how much would be saved by adding a teen driver to a parent’s insurance policy rather than having the young man or woman purchase a separate one.

OAI ran the numbers for how much it would cost a 16-year-old girl to insure a 2009 Toyota Corolla in Los Angeles. The average six-month policy price among five California insurers was a little more than $3,000. The average for a 45-year-old divorced man living in the same area and driving the same type of car was one-third of that — $1,001.

If both of these individuals purchased policies separately, the total average combined cost would be about $4,020. But when quoted together rather than separately, total average costs came down 20 percent, to about $3,180.

When looking at each of the five California insurance companies’ offerings, total premiums dropped by between 15 and 25 percent just by placing both drivers on the same policy.

Some parents may notice their premiums actually increase before their teenage daughters or sons get their licenses. This is because insurers “can start charging additional premium from the time that a driving permit is issued to a minor.”
