Charter Builders & SpawMaxwell Unite Under Balfour Beatty Construction Name

Dallas, TX, November 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- One of Texas’ largest builders of K-12 facilities, Charter Builders, and interior construction, SpawMaxwell, will now begin operating under the Balfour Beatty Construction name. This change comes as a natural next step for both businesses that have been a part of the Balfour Beatty family since 2006 and 2009, respectively.

“More than just a name change, the rebranding signifies a shared commitment to bringing more of what we do best in each core geography to a broader segment of clients across Texas,” said Doug Jones, Regional CEO for Balfour Beatty Construction.

Headquartered in Dallas, Charter Builders has been in operation since 1971. They joined the Balfour Beatty family in 2006. In more than three decades, Charter has completed more than 500 projects ranging in size from $5 million to more than $130 million. Their portfolio includes commercial, government, criminal justice, public assembly, and sports facilities, with a significant expertise in K-12 and higher education.

Charter Builders has twice been named the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Dallas’ Contractor of the Year. They ranked as the 6th largest education contractor for 2010 by Engineering News-Record, and the 2nd largest education contractor in the state of Texas for 2010 by Texas Construction.

“Charter Builders may be changing our name, but our roots in Texas run deep, as does our experience in education facilities,” said Charlie DeVoe, Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction in North Texas. “While we are positioning ourselves to grow nationally and serve a larger client base, we are still the same people, with the same purpose, and the same passion for clients, partners and projects.”

Headquartered in Houston, SpawMaxwell was founded in 1998 with the merger of David Spaw Company and Maxwell Company Construction. In 2009 they joined the Balfour Beatty Construction family. They are one of the largest providers of interior construction services in Texas and have completed more than 40 million square feet of commercial and healthcare construction space.

SpawMaxwell was named the first-ever Contractor of the Year by Texas Construction magazine in 2009, and has been named a “Best Place to Work” in Houston every year since 2001.

“SpawMaxwell had earned a reputation as a top-tier interiors contractor with a growing shell construction portfolio and an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Steve Mechler, Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction in Houston. “That reputation and sentiment has not changed, but we are now speaking with a unified Balfour Beatty Construction voice in Houston and around the state.”

As Balfour Beatty Construction, Charter Builders and SpawMaxwell will maximize opportunities that leverage the strength of both a national and a global brand. Local market collaboration, however, remains a key strategy for both businesses. In 2010, the companies leveraged each other’s strong reputations and long-standing relationships to gain access to the Austin and Houston education markets, winning work with the Pflugerville, Katy, Georgetown and Round Rock Independent School Districts.

The rebranding efforts will result in no major changes to the Balfour Beatty Construction organizational structure. The Dallas offices of SpawMaxwell, Charter Builders and Balfour Beatty Construction will realign to operate under one office in the Dallas area. The SpawMaxwell offices in Austin and Houston will remain open and are expected to see growth as Balfour Beatty Construction expands its presence in these cities.
