OAI: Insurance Roundtable Highlights Growth in Online Policy Sales

Irvine, CA, January 09, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Online Auto Insurance reports that recent discussions among members of the California auto insurance industry about the need for agents to change tactics in order to accommodate the increasing number of consumers buying their vehicle coverage online highlights the many options motorists have for purchasing policies.

Industry experts have noted in recent years that people looking for cheap auto insurance rates are using the Internet in growing numbers to check out quotes and buy policies. And according to the report from the WIAA Education & Research Foundation, that’s cause for concern for agents, who are seeing a decline in customers.

The report—compiled from a roundtable discussion involving industry members—supports other recent research that shows consumers are going online in growing numbers and using the Internet to conduct much of their personal business.

Federal officials say that two-thirds of Americans—roughly 200 million people—have access to high-speed Internet service, and government officials say they are determined to increase that share.

At the same time, the number of people who have used the services of an agent in person has decreased, according to a report released in May by marketing research company comScore. The report showed a 6 percentage-point decline from 2009 to 2011.

Regulators in many states have advised consumers that shopping for coverage online can be a hassle-free way to obtain a policy, but industry experts say that doing a little legwork before you log on will make the process a lot easier.

And several companies that have focused on online sales have profited from it.

According to industry data, Progressive has become the fourth-largest private car insurer in the U.S., in large part because of the company’s online presence, and GEICO is now the No. 3-rated coverage provider in the country, a fact that has been largely attributed to its direct-to-consumer business model.
