OAI: Corvette Theft Report Highlights Comprehensive Insurance Value

More Corvettes stolen in California; NICB suggests layered approach to prevent theft.

Los Angeles, CA, May 16, 2012 --(PR.com)-- A 30-year analysis from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) on stolen Corvettes found high theft rates in California and of stolen ’80s-era models, highlighting the importance of having comprehensive coverage because it's the only kind compensating policyholders when their car is stolen, according to Online Auto Insurance.

The report shows that Corvette owners have about a 1-in-10 chance of getting their car stolen, which should be a red flag to owners indicating that they need to get covered against theft.

Generating car insurance quotations for comprehensive coverage can show lower-than-average rates if the number of thefts in a policyholder’s locale is below average. Conversely, living in a region with higher-than-average theft rates can inflate comprehensive coverage costs.

The NICB found that California led all states in the U.S. by a wide margin in Corvette thefts, registering 14,002 thefts in the 30-year period. Florida ranked second with 8,731.

California not only ranks on top in the number of Corvette thefts but also motor vehicle thefts overall, according to FBI data from 2010, which found that the Golden State registered more than twice as many car thefts as Texas, the state with the second-highest number of stolen cars.

Although the total number of stolen cars in the U.S. has gradually dropped over recent years, according to the NICB, the top five metro areas for theft, most of which are in California, are showing increases.

Insurance companies also consider the type of car covered by a comprehensive policy when calculating rates, so having any Corvette listed in NICB’s recent analysis of most stolen models may mean higher costs.

The NICB report found that about 10 percent of Corvettes were stolen between 1981 and 2011. The 1984 Corvette was the most stolen model, with 8,554 total thefts, followed closely by the ’81 Corvette, with 8,262 total thefts. The 1979 Corvette ranked third with 6,399 thefts in that time period.

The most-stolen model years ranged from late-’70s to mid-’80s, with no ’90s-era model years or after ranking in the top 10.

“Often compared to more exotic European sports cars, the Corvette has performed well in racing circuits around the globe,” NICB spokesman Frank Scafidi said in a statement. “It’s no surprise then to find Corvette owners doting over their cars and keeping them in showroom condition but, like other items of high value and popular attraction, they get stolen.”

Comprehensive coverage may prove valuable after theft, but the NICB recommends a four-layered prevention approach to foil would-be criminals.

“Layered protection” includes: a “common sense” approach that secures the vehicle even during brief parking intervals; displaying “warning devices” that show a car is alarm-protected; utilizing “immobilizing devices” like kill switches and smart keys; and installing “tracking devices” that help police recover a stolen car.
