Amelina Came to Malaysia to Seek Greener Pastures and a Fresh Start, But What She Encountered Was a World Rife with Moral and Physical Corruption

Bukit-Mertajam, Malaysia, November 01, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Amelina, an educated Filipina Muslim, finds herself entrapped in the seamy underbelly of Malaysian society when she is forced to find work after her husband is arrested for murder.

Outskirts Press is pleased to announce the publication of Black Banana by Nigerian author Anthony Amaechi Isoh. It is the story of Amelina, whose husband has been arrested for murder. She quickly finds herself on the brink of disaster, facing poverty and certain ruin unless she can find work to support herself and her family. With few options before her, she makes the heartbreaking choice to relocate to Malaysia, hoping to create a better life for herself and her family by working as a maid.

Before leaving her country, Amelina attends an orientation course organized by her employment agency. “Some of the worse case scenarios to expect,” they tell her, “are being battered, the horrors of various forms of abuse, sexual assaults, tantrums, hunger, loneliness, and sleep deprivation.” She was told that she could expect to experience at least one of these situations, but Amelina sees it all.

Lured into the world of prostitution, Amelina becomes entangled in a world rife with physical and moral corruption…and more money than she could believe possible:

Four months with Madam Rose as her pimp, Amelina learnt that it takes little effort to arouse a man’s desire…. In the four months, she made double her annual salary as a maid. She shopped like a celebrity and couldn’t really account for how she spent most of the money. She had some money in her bank account and didn’t feel rich or contented with it or fulfilled. The sense of guilt that her means of livelihood was sinful overwhelmed her.

As Amelina is caught in a descending spiral of ruined relationships and the loss of her children, she is forced to turn to blackmail, betrayal, and intimidation to settle old scores. But will she survive what fate has in store for her?

Black Banana is a riveting tale of one woman’s quest to find love, peace, and a place for herself and her family. It should not be missed.
