About Joseph D. Duffey, Ph.D.
Dr. Duffey has over 50 years experience in the education field. He served as Senior Vice President at Laureate Education which is a university system providing a network of more than 80 institutions offering quality, accessible education to students internationally. He is responsible for education, academic quality and coordinating the development of Laureate International Universities network programs and partnerships worldwide. Dr. Duffey specializes in global strategies and providing advice on cultural issues. He lectures and consults internationally. He holds 14 honorary degrees from American colleges and universities, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letter by Ritsumeikan University in Japan in 1993 and was named Commander of the Order of the Crown by the King of Belgium in 1980. Dr. Duffey has served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1979. He has written on issues relating to higher education, social and economic policy and is affiliated with the C.F.R.

Dr. Duffey was born on July 1, 1932 in Huntington, West Virginia. He obtained an A.B. from Marshall University in 1954, a B.D. from Andover Theological School in 1957, a S.T.M. from Yale University in 1963 and a Ph.D. from Hartford Seminary in 1969. He is a former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a former Assistant Secretary of State for education and cultural affairs. Dr. Duffey served as the Director of the U.S. Information Agency and also served as the President of American University. He was Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and served as President of the University of Massachusetts. He has served as a Professor at a number of universities. In his spare time he enjoys golf and music.
