F1000Research Celebrates Major Milestone with Publication of 1,000 Articles Since Launch

F1000Research, the open science publishing platform for life scientists which was launched in 2013, has reached a fitting milestone with the publication of its 1,000th article.

Oxford, United Kingdom, October 18, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The 1,000th paper, entitled “MinION Analysis and Reference Consortium: Phase 1 data release and analysis,” is by Ip et al, including several leading groups involved with the assessment of inter-lab variability of the MinION device (from Oxford Nanopore), which is driven by nanopore technology and has been heralded as revolutionising DNA sequencing.

The 1,000 articles published in F1000Research have been contributed by 3,798 authors, and to-date been openly peer-reviewed by 2,061 non-anonymous experts, whose reports can be read alongside the articles. 700 of the published articles have passed peer review by the experts and are, or will shortly be, indexed in PubMed, while the remaining articles are at various stages of peer review, which at F1000Research takes place after publication. The articles have been viewed over 1,150,000 times.

F1000Research is closing in on another landmark: with 8,992 academic posters and slides published at the time of writing, it is heading for the 10,000 posters and slides milestone in the coming months.

F1000Research has also been helping almost 80 research communities establish their own publishing channels on the F1000Research platform, including major organisations and societies such as Médecins Sans Frontières, the International Society for Computational Biology and the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility.

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director of F1000Research, said: “This milestone shows just how quickly scientists have embraced our open science publishing approach, which enables them to get important new findings out into the public domain quickly and transparently for peer review. In fact, our 1000th publication is part of an important new F1000Research Channel where the Channel Editors point out in their Editorial* just how crucial the ability for rapid sharing and publication of new findings, and the open discussion of them, can make a major impact on the progression of the field.”

“I am sure that F1000Research will continue to go from strength to strength as more and more scientists realise how it can help make a real step-change in how they can disseminate, peer review and discuss new findings, and ultimately further biological and medical research.”

About F1000Research
F1000Research is an open science publishing platform for life scientists that offers immediate publication and transparent peer review, avoiding editorial bias and ensuring the inclusion of all source data. This process helps scientists to avoid the traditional, anonymous, pre-publication peer-review process that can cause long delays before new results become visible.

All articles must pass an initial in-house quality check prior to publication on F1000Research. Following open, invited peer review where the referee’s name and affiliation and the referee reports are published alongside the article, authors can make revisions that are then published as new article versions.
