New Novel a Horse-Lover’s Mystery Worth Nuzzling Up to

The brutal murder of a Spanish nobleman and his beautiful Azulejo horse four generations ago rears its head over a century later in “Azulejo: A Tale of Pearls, Promises and Legendary Horses,” a captivating new novel by Daphne Oberon that’s mesmerizing horse lovers and mystery fans alike.

Sacramento, CA, March 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- A galloping ride through a world of wild horses, ghosts and a mysterious, centuries-old legend awaits readers in “Azulejo: A Tale of Pearls, Promises and Legendary Horses,” the captivating new mystery from Outskirts Press author Daphne Oberon.

Now available through the author’s Web site at www.outskirtspress.com/AzulejoHorses, “Azulejo” gorgeously imagines the recent past in a Baja, Mexico sparsely populated by large desert ranches, the powerful personalities who work them, and stories of a lasting curse that haunts the land.

It’s this rural, remote Baja that Donato Perry, a city boy of mixed American and Mexican ancestry, arrives in during the early 1960s to live with his great-great grandfather, Don Tomas. The idea is to help the boy recover his simple country roots, but things get more complicated right off the mark—starting with the special connection he develops with the wild and enigmatic Azulejo stallion, Espiritu.

But while Donato hones his skills as a vaquero, a villainous rancher who is heir to the curse, casts his jealous eye on Espiritu as well. And that’s not all: The rancher learns about Donato’s priceless inheritance in precious pearls, and he wants that, too. He even schemes to separate Donato from his love, Elyse, a visiting naturalist from across the border, in Texas.

Now, Donato must find a way to secure the wild Azulejo horse’s freedom and the return of the pearls while winning Elyse for his own. But can he avoid falling prey to his adversary’s ruinous tactics and the curse hanging over him? And what’s the mystery behind the Azulejo horse’s periodic and unexplained disappearances, anyway?

Through it all, Oberon’s engrossing prose evokes the rich natural landscape, a wide cast of finely drawn characters and the magnetic pull of these ingenious equines. Interspersed with the author’s inspired illustrations, “Azulejo” is a must-read for horse lovers that also packs enough action and unknowns to enthrall mystery die-hards.

“Azulejo” is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.

About the Author: Sacramento resident Daphne Oberon didn’t have to look far for inspiration in writing “Azulejo.” As a girl, her parents moved the family to Baja, Mexico, for several years, where she encountered many of the characters, animals and stories that would eventually find realization in her novel. “My accounts of pearls and buried treasure were inspired by tales I heard from fishermen,” states Oberon. “The descriptions of various mysterious lights combine my own accounts with those given to me by simple folk originating from Southern Mexico to Guatemala.” Unsurprisingly, horses also figure prominently in her life. An owner, breeder and trainer of Arabian horses, Oberon has managed horse farms in several U.S. states.
