Outskirts Press Announces The Road to a Triumphant Life: a Fictionalized Account of One Man’s Extraordinary Journey

Orlando, FL, July 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Journey through Nick’s World tells the story of a man whose willingness to overcome impossible odds sustains him through an abusive childhood, abject poverty, the horrors of WWII, and tragic loss. It is an inspiring story of many real-life accounts, which shows the strength of the human spirit to rise above difficult circumstances and not only survive but succeed in both life and love.

In this semiautobiographical novel, author Nicholas J. Shealy draws in readers from its opening pages, as he provides a sobering and heartfelt look at a man whose struggles began as a young child during the days of the Great Depression. As the painful years roll by with a father whose alcoholism has turned him into a wife - and child abuser, Nick is finally pushed to the limit to protect himself and his mother from the monster his father has become:

“Nick sobbed as he pedaled. His side was hurting, his face was swollen and bruised, and he couldn’t see out of his left eye. He was so terrified that he didn’t know what to do. So he just kept pedaling until he ended up at his secret hideaway, where he just sat and cried. He thought he was a coward for running away and for not staying to rescue his mother, when suddenly a calm came over him. He had decided what to do and vowed to himself that his Daddy would never mistreat his mother or himself again because ... he was going to kill him…. When he made it inside the house, Alvin was asleep and Katie wasn’t around. Quietly, Nick approached the dresser where Alvin kept his pistol and lifted it from the drawer. In a trance like state, Nick cocked the pistol and pointed it directly at his father‘s head.”

While what happened will not be revealed here, it can be said that Nick and his hardworking mother now face a hardscrabble life. The reader will see through Nick’s eyes a world that is at times unyielding, as he struggles to stay away from the influence of neighborhood gangs and a reputation that pairs him with the criminal deeds of his father. But the reader will also see the compassionate people who appear in his life—those who recognize what it means to be given a chance or a break when it is needed most. Whether as a boy, a teenager, or a man, Nick proves that he is more than a survivor, as he makes his way in the world to reach an honored place not only in society but in the hearts of others.
