Inspired by the true story of an NYPD officer, the novel follows Sofia Vega, a New York City police officer whose life is forever changed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
When the planes strike the World Trade Center, Sofia and her fellow officers do what they have been trained to do: They go to work. While others flee the devastation, they run toward it. In the terrible hours and days that follow, Sofia works amid the smoke, wreckage, and toxic dust while helping frightened families search for their missing loved ones.
Sofia eventually comes home—but Ground Zero comes home with her.
As the years pass, the hidden consequences of that day begin to emerge. Sofia and her family must confront the emotional and physical costs of her service while holding on to the love that has carried them through their lives together.
Although 9/11 is central to the story, She Never Left Ground Zero is also a love story and a family story. The novel explores courage, sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring bonds between people whose lives were permanently changed by one of the darkest days in American history.
