About Janet DeMaria
Janet DeMaria is the creator of the award-winning Skadoosie, a fresh approach to the traditional baby onesie. Her innovative design grew out of her own experience first as a parent and later as a babysitter, when she realized that infant bodysuits had changed very little in more than two decades.
After her husband, Ron, passed away from Mesothelioma at the age of 58, DeMaria raised their son, Dylan, on her own. As Dylan became more independent, she began babysitting and once again encountered many of the same challenges she remembered from her early years as a mother. The difficulty of dressing fragile newborns and working with outdated onesie designs inspired her to develop a product focused on both comfort and ease of use.
The Skadoosie received its name from a babysitting moment when a young child she was caring for “skedaddled” away while wearing a prototype. Made in the USA from 100% natural organic cotton, the Skadoosie was designed to give parents peace of mind about quality and safety. Its design includes two key features: baby-soft, adjustable Velcro that makes dressing easier and a unique diaper slot in the back that allows parents to check or change a diaper without completely undressing the child.
“Babies do not like having a onesie put over their heads and it’s a struggle to get their arms in the proper slots in the old style. Their arms are fragile, and parents are afraid at times they will get hurt. The Skadoosie really minimizes that worry. It goes on them like a blouse,” DeMaria explains.
Following the success of the Skadoosie, DeMaria expanded the brand by introducing the Preemie line, created specifically for premature infants. This smaller version allows access for lead lines, enabling preemies to wear the garment comfortably while receiving care in the Nursery Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Since its inception, the Skadoosie has received several honors, including the Parent’s Magazine Editors Pick for 2018, the Lifetime Award for National Parenting Seal of Approval, and the Mom’s Choice Award Gold. DeMaria has also received numerous recognitions. In 2023, she was named a Top 100 Inventor by the United States Inventors Association. As a valued member of P.O.W.E.R., she was named Woman of the Month for April 2022 and was recognized as a VIP in the Fall 2023 and Winter 2026 issues. She was also named an Honored Member for Spring 2026.
Most recently, DeMaria has been advocating for patent rights as indicated in the U.S. Constitution. She has traveled to Washington, D.C., where she met with Senate and Congressional judicial staffers to defend inventors’ rights to exclusivity under the law.
Skadoosie products are available at skadoosie.com, Etsy, Pinterest, Instagram, and now Walmart online. In Ron’s memory, a portion of every Skadoosie sale is donated to the Mesothelioma Research Foundation to support the search for a cure for Asbestos Cancer.
