Lupus Research Institute Takes Part in 2010 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) to Raise Funds for Breakthrough Research in Lupus

Reaches Out with Message that “Hope Alone Can’t Get Us to the Cure—You Can!”

Lupus Research Institute Takes Part in 2010 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) to Raise Funds for Breakthrough Research in Lupus
New York, NY, October 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) is once again participating in the CFC campaign that enables the millions of active and retired employees of the federal government, military, and U.S. Postal Service to designate a charity for pre-tax giving.

A full 94 cents of every dollar contributed to the LRI through the CFC (code #48891) and other means advances innovative research into lupus, a perilous and chronic autoimmune illness that mysteriously affects 1.5 million Americans and millions more worldwide, many of them young women in their childbearing years.

Because of its lean and innovative model for supporting sound but untested and novel ideas, the LRI is rapidly generating discoveries and breakthroughs that quickly are leading scientists closer to ways to prevent, treat, and cure the illness.

“These CFC contributions are essential to helping us find a cure for lupus,” said Margaret G. Dowd, LRI president and CEO. “Generous givers helped enable us to fund an incredible $3.6 million in novel lupus research in 2009 alone. We are so grateful for their critical help in fueling lupus research—and discovery.”

The employees have until December 15, 2010, to designate the LRI—CFC #48891—as a charity of choice.

About Lupus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (S.L.E.), commonly called lupus, is a chronic and potentially fatal autoimmune disorder and one of the nation’s least recognized major diseases. In lupus, the body's immune system forms antibodies that can attack virtually any healthy organ or tissue, from the kidneys to the brain, heart, lungs, skin, joints and blood. Lupus is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and stroke among young women. No new treatments for lupus have been approved in 50 years.
