Presque Isle Downs & Casino is sponsoring a food drive for those less fortunate through the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Erie, PA, November 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Presque Isle Downs & Casino is sponsoring a food drive for those less fortunate through the Second Harvest Food Bank. The casino has collected more than 17,000 lbs of donated food thus far from the general public and the harvest is just beginning.

Starting December 1st, the casino will be conducting its second annual employee food and telephone book recycling drive. The monies raised from the recycling of the telephone books will also go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Last year the casino employees collected 525 lbs of phonebooks for a total value of $900. Employees also donated more than 1700 lbs of food. The general public donated more than 17,000 lbs of food.

The general public is encouraged to bring two cans of food to the casino players club and the casino will reward them with $5 of free play. The casino believes its investment is worthwhile.

“We think the program is a huge success,” said Luisa Marengo-Heifner, Presque Isle Downs and Casino Human Resources Director. “This year we hope to raise more money than any other year.”

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania is dedicated to providing subsistence support to individuals in dire need of help in their 11 county Northwest Pennsylvania service area. During fiscal year 2010-11, Second Harvest distributed more than 8.3 million pounds of food.

“Presque Isle downs and Casino is a citizen in this community. And like most good citizens we feel we have a responsibility to help those around us who are in need,” said Fred Buro, Presque Isle Downs and Casino President. “We will do our best to make a difference.”

People are encouraged to bring two canned goods to the casino but they are not limited to that donation. It is a maximum of $5 in free play each day they donate however. Guests can continue to bring in items through November 30th to the Players Club.
