Fall in Love with Art Quilts by Najee

Fine Art Paintings using the symbols from the Underground Railroad quilt codes.

Fall in Love with Art Quilts by Najee
Atlanta, GA, June 22, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Quilts have been there to comfort us for hundreds of years, now we have art quilts. Fine art quilts are original one of a kind works of art by Atlanta artist L. Najee Dorsey using the Underground Railroad quilt codes.

Art quilts by Najee use symbols from the quilt codes of the Underground Railroad as a visual dialogue for the awareness that quilt codes played in American culture. The quilts could non-verbally alert those who were escaping from slavery to freedom. Only one quilt would appear at any one time. Each quilt signaled a specific action for a slave to take at the particular time that the quilt was on view. The code had dual meaning: first to signal slaves to prepare to escape and second to give clues and indicate directions on the journey.

Each painting is a collage of bold brilliant colors, texture, fabric and code symbols, ranging in size from 12 x16” to 36 x 48” the painting will be showcased at the artist booth at the national black fine art show in Atlanta, July 20 - 29.
