National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship Names 2014 Intuit Impact Award Winners

Two Florida educators honored for work in entrepreneurship education and support at the 12th Annual Conference of the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship, underway this week in Phoenix, Arizona.

Phoenix, AZ, October 14, 2014 --( The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, has partnered with Intuit to honor two educators with Intuit Impact Awards at its 12th Annual Conference, powered by Intuit, now underway in Phoenix. NACCE Intuit Impact Awards honor faculty and staff members who have shown excellence in providing entrepreneurial education and support services.

Professor LaTrice Moore, from Polk State College in Winter Haven, Florida, received the Excellence in Teaching Entrepreneurship Award, and Thomas Kindred, Jr., manager of Applied Research & Entrepreneurial Activities at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida, received the Excellence in Providing Technical Assistance and Training to Entrepreneurs and Existing Businesses Award. Both recipients received free registration for NACCE2014 and a $1,500 travel stipend from Intuit.

LaTrice Moore is being honored for her work in developing Polk State’s Entrepreneurship Certificate Program. Several years ago Moore identified a need to provide a mechanism for interested individuals to learn more about entrepreneur-ship. She was interested not only in creating a course for current Business students, but in finding a way to help as many people was possible learn about entrepreneurship. To this end, she created the Entrepreneurship Certificate Program, which consists of four college-credit courses, three of which Moore created specifically for the program. The program introduces students to the concept of entrepreneurship, helps them learn to find and analyze opportunities, and introduces them to basic tools for small business management. Moore also established an advisory board for the program that consists of community business owners. Her commitment to teaching entrepreneurship does stop when she leaves the Polk State classroom. For example, last past spring she partnered with professors from other area colleges and universities to offer an entrepreneurship class at a new local business incubator.

Thomas Kindred, Jr., is being honored for his work in support of the clients at the Business Incubator at IRSC’s Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. A one-time business owner and entrepreneur himself, Kindred provides clients with robust support, training, encouragement and direction for their ventures. He constantly problem solves for clients, coming up with innovation ways to meet their needs. In addition, he has been creative and relentless in his strategies and approach to creating an entrepreneurial awareness and awakening within the region. He created and conducts regular “Hatchery” meetings in which incubator clients move through a 12-week, step-by-step business plan building program. His other creations include a quarterly newsletter, a TV show, a radio show, a one-day conference, and “Pioneer Pitch Panel,” an event that allows mature business incubator clients to pitch their business concept to a group of successful entrepreneurs with the goal of gaining constructive feedback on their pitch. To date, he has assisted and guided over 20 starts-ups through the various stages of entrepreneurship.

The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) is an organization of educators, administrators, presidents and entrepreneurs, focused on inciting entrepreneurship in their community and on their campus. NACCE has two main goals: 1. Empower the college to approach the business of running a community college with an entrepreneurial mindset, and 2. Grow the community college’s role in supporting job creation and entrepreneurs in their local ecosystem.

Founded in 2002, NACCE is at the heart of the "entrepreneurship movement.” Through membership, an annual conference and exhibition, regional summits, a quarterly journal, monthly webinars, a dynamic list-serv, and training resources, NACCE serves as the hub for the dissemination and integration of knowledge and successful practices regarding entrepreneurial leadership, entrepreneurship education and student business incubation. These initiatives and resulting actions advance economic prosperity in the communities served by its member colleges. NACCE is a founding member of the White House-led Start-up America Partnership. NACCE has over 300 member colleges, representing nearly 2,000 members and approximately 465,000 students.
