Agency Rescues Dealerships and Small Businesses from the Cyber Defamation Revolution

SEM Media Group combats aggressors out to destroy companies’ digital reputations.

Scottsdale, AZ, November 24, 2014 --(PR.com)-- SEM Media, a premier online agency specializing in automotive dealership and small business marketing, has launched a new service to rescue the reputations of auto dealerships around the county when they are vehemently attacked by competitors or unhappy customers. There’s a Revolution taking place, a coup d’états, if you will. Although SEM Media dedicates a significant part of its firm’s business to helping dealerships transition to online parts sales through specialized lead generation software and e-commerce solutions, they saw a need in this area, namely: Brand Management.

“Unfortunately, the story is becoming too common in today’s digital age,” says Phil Thow, President of SEM Media Group. “Either an aggressive competitor decides to destroy the competition or an angry customer or client launches an online attack that wrongly portrays a company through malicious websites, videos, and reviews.”

Under the guise of the First Amendment right to freedom of speech, there have been many documented cases of individuals and anonymous bloggers and reviewers who launched full-scale online attacks toward unsuspecting auto dealerships, companies, and other individuals. Some instigators have gone as far as to picket in front of businesses when they felt wronged. This behavior, unfortunately, can impart serious hardships on a business, including lost revenue, tarnished reputations, and mistrust in new customers.

“The best, if not only, way to deal with these digital attacks is to go at them preventively,” says Thow. “It is much more effective to protect an online reputation than to try to paint a new picture after someone has already launched an attack. Too often attention goes to the proverbial ‘squeaky wheel,’ and when that wheel is only spinning out false information it can do real damage to a successful business. I can think of one auto dealership client of ours in particular that suffered unfairly and lost, buy some estimates, 25 percent of its business until they regained control of their reputation.”

In the case Thow mentions, and in many others like it, attackers have been able to do the most damage through Marketing strategies that ranks their “attack sites” higher than the business’s actual website. In one well-documented case reported by Newsweek in September 2014, a blogger who tried to remain anonymous while discussing her personal life was attacked, and nearly overnight “75 percent of the links appearing on the first page of a search of her name were the attack sites and disparaging posts.” Entire websites were launched with titles such as, “[Name withheld]: Do Not Hire.”

“It would be hard, I think, for a business to search its name one day and discover that the majority of the search results showed negative, business-killing remarks,” says Thow. “So to stop that from happening we can position a company strongly and favorably in order to withstand, or even avoid, such strong attacks.”
