There is a New Team in Town: the Mayor of Frisco Joins a Group of Professional Athletes to Help Make Fitness Fun

Michael Simpson, the Mayor of Frisco wants all kids to know that fitness is fun. As a matter of fact, he has joined a team of professional athletes that want to show kids how to run faster, jump higher, and get stronger.

Frisco, TX, November 10, 2007 --(PR.com)-- The Mayor recently attended a summit in Washington where for the first time in history Mayors from across the nation came together to share ideas on how to increase safe physical activity and promote healthy foods in order to create healthier communities. As part of his commitment to the cause the Mayor of Frisco has joined TEAM United. “Childhood Obesity is one of the biggest problems in any city and in the U.S. and is affecting children and parents all over the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex.” said Mike Simpson. “We all must do our part.” The Mayor of Frisco is sending out a personal call to action asking all Mayors, School Districts, and Parks and Recreation Centers to get involved, raise awareness, and together address childhood obesity.

As part of T.E.A.M., he joins athletes such as Jake Reed and The Frisco Thunder to serve the community through education and support by providing a public platform to recognize and reward families and students who participate in the outreach programs. Children will be recognized for good sportsmanship, on the “field of play” in school and at home, fitness improvements, and fitness excellence.

One of the missions that T.E.A.M. is embracing is the obesity epidemic in Texas. Obesity continues to be one of the most important health problems facing Texas today. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among Texas children and adults is higher than the national average and continues to increase.

Many of the professional athletes who have joined T.E.A.M. want to be a positive role model for our youth – boys and girls – and help promote a healthy lifestyle. “All of our athletes remember someone who reached out and helped them when they were little, me included”, said Jake Reed. “This is a great opportunity for our team and you, our sponsors to give back to the community that supports them. We’re thrilled to be involved in an outreach program that so directly benefits the youth of our community”.

T.E.A.M. gets underway this month with the launch of “The Fastest Kid” contest dubbed “The Thunder Run”.

Children of all ages are invited to join the T.E.A.M., register for the event at www.fastestkid.com and participate in speed camps held in various communities, schools, and locations all over the metroplex. Professional athletes from many different sporting venues have committed to show up at these events to promote and educate the kids on developing healthier lifestyles.

The finalist from each age group will participate in the “Thunder Run” during the half time show at the Frisco Thunder opening season game. The winner of each age group will receive prizes donated by event sponsors including a Sports Performance Team Sports Scholarship.

Sports Performance Team, Inc of Dallas, an organization that offers sports specific training will be managing the roll out of the events leading up to the final run. SPT Dallas trainers and professional athletes will coordinate the speed camps and offer advice to participating parents and kids on how to: run faster, jump higher, get stronger and how to make fitness fun.

Kids can join T.E.A.M. by signing up now for the first annual “Thunder Run” and can register online at www.fastestkid.com. Registration is a $15.00 charitable donation. Proceeds from the race benefit ongoing educational programs and events promoted by T.E.A.M. Each kid is also registered to become a member of The TEAM Kids Club and will receive a personalized letter from one of the TEAM athletes, a TEAM membership card and other Kid Club specials.

“T.E.A.M. is excited to have the opportunity and is pleased to have these athletes as part of our initiative, which started in Dallas and is expanding from city to city,” said Patricia Gamborino, one of the T.E.A.M. founders. “Our mission is to help children get fit by tapping into their love of sports. To accomplish this goal, we are building a team of athletes and professionals to rally resources for children’s health.”

T.E.A.M., a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity, will raise funds through corporate sponsorship, events, grants and other forms of philanthropy. The funds will go to community outreach programs that promote fitness.

A variety of other organizations have stepped forward to support the launch of T.E.A.M. Some of the supporting partners and athletes include Jake and Vinita Reed, Cris Carter, Randy Moss, Jim Jeffcoat, Jay Johnson, Eddie Hill, Jen Welter Dallas Diamonds WPFL’s Saftey, Sports Performance Team of Dallas, The Fitness Club, Health Clubs of America, the Frisco Thunder, Bell Online Media, Advice Interactive Group, Guardian Fitness, Gamebreakers, One Disc Records, Boardwalk Porsche, Walmart, Vast Improvements, Pro Power Suit, Gaines Total Fitness, Day Event Productions, Language Link, Get It Together Fitness, Ultimate Sport Nutrition, Taylor Faces, Shape Xpress, and many more.

To help curtail the obesity epidemic, T.E.A.M. has committed to work with partners to put the fun back into exercise and support the community on helping fight the obesity epidemic threatening our health and our children’s health.
