Actors Theatre Workshop Hosting 27th Annual Holiday Celebration for At-Risk Youth

New York, NY, December 10, 2017 --(PR.com)-- On December 12 and 13, 2017, The Actors Theatre Workshop (ATW), a non-profit theater and educational institution located in Chelsea, will host their 27th annual holiday celebration and creative classes for Builders of the New World (BNW), ATW’s award-winning after-school theater and educational enrichment program for children living in temporary housing facilities. The celebrations also serve as the kick-off to BNW’s next 12-week semester, starting in March 2019.

Artistic Director Thurman Scott, along with a diverse group of volunteer mentors, will share the joyful moment with the 85 young participants in the program, ages six to 14. The festive activities include partaking in a holiday banquet and exchanging gifts with the children. BNW’s signature feature is its creative class, where Scott uses theatre principles to spark the children’s imaginations. The children construct their visions of a brighter future through their artwork and stories, then present their ideas on stage in front of a supportive audience. Volunteers can apply to register at http://www.actorstheatreworkshop.com/holiday-parties/.

Using this year’s BNW theme, the ideals of American democracy, the children are able to create their educational visions by learning how to build steps and sequences to achieve their goals. As a result, this gives them the self-confidence to overcome the various challenges within their environments and feel like they are valued members of society.

The adult mentors are also inspired by their BNW experience, as they appreciate that despite the challenging social and political climate, it is possible to give back and make a positive and lasting impact.

“It’s because of the Actor’s Theatre Workshop and people like you, leaders like you, who’ve helped mold me and helped me to become the person that I am, and the person that I planned to be in the future,” said Sulma Arzu, graduate of ATW’s Young People’s Creative Workshop, now working for NYC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
