Cheryelle Cruickshank currently serves as the first Chief Executive Officer of Human First, Inc. which is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization serving the developmentally disabled communities of New York City and Long Island. She was appointed by UCP’s New York City Board of Directors in 2016. Founded in 2001, this multicultural agency is committed to creating positive relationships and safe environments across New York communities. Their Mission is to provide enhanced opportunities for individuals with special needs to reach their personal goals. Through the development of effective support systems for previously underserved populations, Human First impacts the lives of more than 1,400 families across New York City, and Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Their 400+ culturally trained, multilingual staff delivers a range of person-centered services, including Individualized Support Services, Service Coordination, Community Habilitation, Day Habilitation and Residential Services. Ms. Cruickshank provides strategic direction with a strong focus on growth and development for Human First’s individuals and staff. She is responsible for advocacy, budget management, cost effective strategies and liaising with government officials.

Born on May 25th in Brooklyn, New York, Cheryelle obtained a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from SUNY Albany. She attended the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University Institute with a concentration in Nonprofit Management for Middle Managers in Community Development Organizations and in 2011, graduated with distinction from a yearlong leadership program sponsored by the National Urban Fellows. In 2014, Cheryelle obtained a M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Capella University.

Ms. Cruickshank’s passion for her field stems from working at a center for individuals with developmental disabilities during her college years. She later led a distinguished 20-year career with Services for the Underserved, where she trained, developed, and managed 250+ healthcare service professionals. She also developed nearly 30 programs for developmentally disabled individuals, including Adult Day Services, Medicaid Service Coordination, Residential Services, After-School Programs and Family Reimbursement. In 2008 she was named Associate Executive Director at Unique People Services, Inc. where she was responsible for oversight of 22 programs staffed with 230 employees throughout New York City and Westchester providing services to adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities and HIV/AIDS.

Ms. Cruickshank serves on the Board of the NYS Association of Community Residential Agencies, the InterAgency Council, and the NY Association of Emerging Multicultural Agencies. She was a Past President of the Bronx Developmental Disability Council and participated in local government planning for the Bronx for nearly five years. In her spare time she enjoys travel with her family.
