Norfolk Academy Seniors Granted Prestigious College Scholarships

Norfolk, VA, April 05, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The Jefferson Scholarship Foundation at the University of Virginia has selected Norfolk Academy senior Harper Dodd as a Jefferson Scholar. Jefferson Scholarships are awarded to “the most promising leaders, scholars, and citizens in the world.” In addition to full financial support, the Scholarship provides extensive opportunities including an outdoor leadership program, travel studies, an internship program, public service, and a two-week leadership and citizenship institute. Harper joins Norfolk Academy graduates Kylie Philbin ’11 and Caroline Herre ’12, who were also awarded Jefferson Scholarships.

Norfolk Academy senior Harry Lustig was selected by Washington and Lee University to receive its distinguished Johnson Scholarship. This full scholarship is offered to individuals who demonstrate exceptional academic and personal promise. The Johnson Scholarship Program in Leadership and Integrity believes that those “students who have the intellect to excel and the selflessness to care should have the opportunity to lead.”

Norfolk Academy senior Garrett Ott was selected for Washington University in St. Louis’ University Scholars Program in Medicine. Garrett was one of only 8 students selected for this dual admission, full scholarship program awarded to students with outstanding academic records and demonstrated leadership skills who possess compassion, commitment to community, aptitude, integrity, and motivation suitable for a career in medicine. Garrett credits his participation in Norfolk Academy’s Medical Externship Program (NAME) as the reason he began thinking about and pursuing pre-med scholarships. NAME provides Upper School students opportunities to participate in a series of medical education programs and internships in the private M.D./hospital industry. The goal of the program is to inspire careers in healthcare and ensure an increasing base of qualified physicians for the Hampton Roads area. The program is a joint effort among community physicians, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Sentara Healthcare, and Norfolk Academy.

Congratulations to Harper, Harry, and Garrett for their hard-earned distinctions. The Norfolk Academy Class of 2013 is an accomplished group of young men and women who continue to receive news of college acceptances and honors. The school will publish a full list later this spring.
