The filmmakers of the blues documentary Born In Chicago have partnered with Pledgemusic.com for a fan funded campaign to finish the film, with additional support from Skyrocket Holdings and Shout! Factory.

As with recently lauded films that explored other essential music scenes like The Wrecking Crew, Muscle Shoals, and 50 Feet From Stardom, Born In Chicago shines a light on an important moment in history, when a group of middle class suburban kids traveled to Chicago’s inner city to learn the blues at the feet of legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and brought it to the masses by inflecting the sounds on albums by artists such as Bob Dylan.

Born In Chicago features interviews and performances from Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Jack White, Steve Miller, Hubert Sumlin, Charlie Musselwhite, Eric Burdon, Sam Lay and Elvin Bishop. Members of Chicago Blues Reunion, the ad hoc group centered around Barry Goldberg, Harvey Mandel, Corky Siegel and Nick Gravenites (who wrote the song “Born In Chicago” for his friend Paul Butterfield), serve as musical and narrative interlocutors throughout. The film is narrated by Marshall Chess, scion of the family whose Chess Records label helped catalyze Chicago’s post-war blues explosion.

Born In Chicago has been a labor of love for its producers over the course of the past six years.

Directed by John Anderson, who earned a Grammy nomination for Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, the film was produced by John Beug, who previously won an Emmy for Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival Chicago (PBS Great Performances), and worked on Grammy-winning long-form video projects for Tom Petty and the Doors. The film’s co-producer is musician Barry Goldberg. Executive producers of Born In Chicago for Chicago’s Out of the Box Records are Timm Martin, Chris Stewart, Bert Moreno and Elliot Rabinowitz. The film was edited by Mitchell Sinoway, who has worked on projects by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Van Halen, Roy Orbison and many others.

Since wrapping production, the film has been screened to critical acclaim at numerous film and music festivals, including SXSW, Lincoln Center, Sonoma and the Chicago Blues Festival. While the doc is complete and has been screened, funds are needed to obtain rights for music and archival video footage used in the film.

Barry Goldberg and Timm Martin are available for interviews.
