Sit ‘n Sleep Donates Tempurpedic Mattresses to Los Angeles Foster Care Youth
Los Angeles, CA, January 21, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Most young adults have parents who will support them through their transition into adulthood and often beyond, whether it is helping them open a checking account, applying for their first job, or driving them off to college with a car full of necessities. However, for many in foster care, the scenario can be dramatically different.

In California, about 5,000 18-21 year olds transition out of the foster care system into independent living each year. Many young adults continue to need support after leaving foster care, particularly around housing.

In an effort to help raise awareness for transitioning foster youth, iconic mattress retailer Sit ‘n Sleep has partnered with leading California human services agency Aspiranet, to donate mattresses to 10 former foster youth residing in Los Angeles County who have recently entered Aspiranet’s Transitional Housing Placement Program.

“Too often the needs of the thousands of former foster youth who age out of the system are overlooked,” explains Larry Miller, CEO of Sit ‘n Sleep. “Sit ‘n Sleep is honored to help these young adults as they transition into adulthood. Everyone deserves a healthy night’s sleep. We know these mattresses will provide a good night’s sleep for these deserving youth so they can focus on pursuing their education and career dreams.”

Aspiranet’s Transitional Housing Placement plus Foster Care (THP + FC) Program offers transitional age youth throughout California the option to live in a multi-family housing unit or in an apartment. In addition to housing, young adults in the program also receive support for basic needs, emotional support, jobs and education. The Sit ‘n Sleep donations arrive at an ideal time as Aspiranet is seeking to expand its Los Angeles County Housing Program to help meet the needs of the youth it serves.

“As a provider of Transitional Age Youth Services, the funding we receive allows us to meet the basic needs of these former foster youth,” explains Jeannie Imelio, Executive Director for Aspiranet. “This donation allows us to provide enriched opportunities, and goes well beyond what the youth can even imagine for their first home. It helps to create a warm, safe, and well-equipped space for them to start their adult life.”
