Robert Golan, PC of Golan & Masiakos Provides Safety Tip Sheet for Taxi & Ridesharing Service Drivers
Plainview, NY, July 03, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Did you know that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, taxi drivers have the fifth most fatal job in New York and are 20 times more likely to be murdered than other workers? Though these statistics focus on taxi drivers, the safety risks apply to drivers for popular ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft as well. Robert Golan, PC of Golan & Masiakos, LLP provides the following tip sheet for New York taxi, Uber and Lyft drivers to stay safe on the road:

Know Danger Zones

Get to know the more dangerous locations and times in your city. If possible, avoid driving between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. to avoid robbery, mugging, and other violence. Learn about the most dangerous locations in your area such as streets, neighborhoods, or bars. Never pick up or drop off customers in dark alleys or any other area that makes you feel unsafe.

Evaluate Riders

If you drive for an app-based ridesharing service, rider ratings are a crucial tool to keep yourself safe. If a potential rider has a rating lower than four, decline the request or take extra precautions. Many cautious drivers avoid riders with ratings lower than 4.5.

If you’re working without an app, give every rider a thorough look-over at the beginning of the ride. Pay attention to the rider’s body language to spot any suspicious behavior and make note of identifying details such as height, hair and eye color, clothing, etc.

Have a Lifeline

While driving, do your best to stay in touch with someone outside the car. Taxi companies usually have a dispatcher who can provide immediate help in an emergency. Taxi drivers should make sure they always have access to their dispatcher to report a dangerous situation.

Uber and Lyft drivers don’t have dispatchers, but they can set up a similar safety system with a friend or family member. Let someone know when you work a shift. Tell that person you will check in with him between rides and to call the police if he doesn’t hear from you for a certain period of time. Consider apps such as Find My Friends to give your friend exact information about your location in case of an incident.
