Such Stuff as Dreams Are Made of, Jolles 80th Birthday - Jolles & Rheuban Art Exhibition
South Pasadena, CA, September 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Metaphors, narratives and myths are abundant in the mixed-media works of Sondra Jolles and m. Rheuban. An opening reception will be held Saturday, September 13th, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tah Gallery, 1015 Mission Street in South Pasadena.

Both Sondra Jolles and m. Rheuban's mixed media works reveal the stuff that dreams are made of, layer upon layer, just as our lives are made of all that ever happens. These artists build an icon of sophistication and innocence, compelling our engagement in the genial complicity of an inescapable communion with life.

Sondra Jolles, a lifelong artist, will be celebrating her 80th birthday with this exhibition. She starts with a blank canvas and builds upon it with instinctive subtlety. She affectionately chooses a photo of something she cares about deeply, then pieces together to form a whole, if not a little fractured, image which is glued to the canvas - a photo from the past, a fragment of Japanese text, adding brushstrokes by paintbrush, an echo of her travels from times past, a scent of endearment, a hint of hope, such stuff as dreams are made of. Jolles states: "I paint because I paint because I paint - therefore I am" (with apololges to Descartes and Rousseu).

Born in New York City, then moving to Los Angeles, Sondra's many works are inspired by her world travels, with past exhibitions in Paris, Hong Kong, and Singapore. "Whatever feels right " says the artist, an intuitive, "a mix of this and that of the human mystery".

m. Rheuban likes to be known simply as "m". She uses canvas and wood to create her highly narrative works that mix past and present to create her playful yet sophisticated visual-scapes. Incorporating paint, papers, fabrics, metals, and three-dimensional objects, and utilizing an architectural structure, she designs symbolic expression rich in surface quality. Her use of deep colors, black backgrounds and rhythmic patterns create intriguing compositions that are musical to the eyes.

Los Angeles born, Rheuban has received numerous awards in many local and national juried shows. "Life is like a jigsaw puzzle, and in my art, I fit all the pieces together". Rheuban is a member of Collage Artists of America, the Los Angeles Art Association and President of Women Painters West.

The exhibition will run through the end of September.
