Dahntay Jones

About

Standout: to be different, unique, one-of-a-kind. These are a few definitions, which would be used to describe the word. But there is one other description, which could be used as a standout – Dahntay Jones. The name alone (pronounced Don-tay) is unique and different.

Jones was a stand-out at Duke University, where he averaged 18 points per game his senior season leading the team in scoring. Originally drafted in 2003 as the 20th overall pick by the Boston Celtics, Jones’ rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, signing him in July 2003.

The 6’6”, 210lb., Guard/Forward has received numerous accolades including being named Honorable Mention All-American by AP in 2003, voted to All-ACC Defensive Team 2003/2002 and All-ACC 1st Team in 2003. In 2001, Jones won the Gold Medal at the World Championship for Young Men with the U.S. Team, earned All-Tournament honors in the ECAC Holiday Festival in 2000 and was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team in 1999.

Jones made the transition into the NBA without missing a step. In the 2004-05 season, he scored in double figures five times and averaged 10 points per game for the season.

Although the season takes up most of his time, he always makes it a point to participate in community related activities. He has been involved with several charities including the NBA Read to Achieve, Memphis Grizzlies Bowling for Backpacks and visits to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital to name a few.

In December 2005, Jones will launch his own non-profit organization, The Dahntay Jones Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the overall quality of life for troubled and underprivileged children by assisting them in their dreams of a higher education. The Foundation will provide mentoring sessions with at-risk youth, as well as college scholarships. “I am grateful that basketball has given me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of today’s youth. There are lots of obstacles kids have to deal with and I have made it my mission to help them win.” Jones further states, “I was taught at a young age, that you are given blessings so that you may be a blessing to others, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Dahntay Jones - a unique, one-of-a-kind individual. Not only a standout on the court, but off the court as well.
