Balfour Beatty Construction’s Hank Mouser Named Safety Professional of the Year

Dallas, TX, April 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- At its annual Awards Night on April 21, 2010, TEXO, the combined chapter of the North/East Texas Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and the Associated Builders and Contractors North Texas, named Balfour Beatty Construction’s Hank Mouser its 2010 Safety Professional of the Year. The award recognizes safety professionals who demonstrate a commitment to safety excellence by leading their company’s safety and environmental efforts and helping to raise the level of safety awareness for the entire construction industry.

Loss prevention director with Balfour Beatty, Mouser has more than 35 years of total industry experience and nine years serving the company in its DFW division. With his industry tenure, technical expertise, and passion for the well being and safety of all, Mouser has become an instrumental leader in the direction of the division’s loss prevention program and currently spearheads the safety function of the division’s quarterly scorecard system. Since the system was implemented three years ago, observed safety violations have decreased by more than 50 percent.

Since the company launched its Zero Harm safety initiative in 2009, Mouser has helped Balfour Beatty Construction make significant strides toward its goal of achieving “zero deaths, zero injuries to the public, and zero ruined lives among all our people by 2012.” Mouser’s passion for Zero Harm has proved infectious, as not only employees, but also subcontractors, partners, and clients, have embraced the Zero Harm concept.

The results are starting to show: Balfour Beatty Construction reported a company-wide Recordable Incident Rate of 0.7 for 2009, compared to the previous year’s rate of 1.35, which was 70 percent better than industry average.

“Hank truly embodies our Zero Harm philosophy,” says Mark Reed, senior vice president with Balfour Beatty Construction. “He treats all employees, subcontracting partners, and vendors as if they were family. Everyone on the jobsite is someone’s son, daughter, father, mother, husband, or wife, and Hank feels personally responsible for making sure they go home safely to their families every night.”

As Doug Jones, division president and CEO offers, “Hank has a real passion for rallying our project teams to ensure that every worker on our sites gets home safely every day. It’s a difficult job to be the safety ‘auditor’ and also be seen as a project team partner, but he balances these roles well. Hank is very deserving of this honor and we’re so proud to have him at Balfour Beatty.”
