)-- Presque Isle Downs & Casino hosted Country 98’s, (WXTA) 13th Annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radio-thon benefiting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital last Thursday & Friday in the casino clubhouse. The event raised $20,218 for the world’s leading research hospital in childhood cancers & catastrophic illnesses.
The two day event, which featured a guest appearance from country music artist Chris Higbee, was a success, according to St Jude officials.
“The radio-thon was a great success thanks to Country 98 WXTA, Presque Isle Downs, all of the great sponsors, volunteers and all of the Erie residents that became Partners in Hope throughout the 2-day period. The radio-thon raised more than $20,000, which is enough money to cover the cost of the ICU daily room rate for four days for a St. Jude child,” said Whitney Fain, Senior Event Marketing Representative ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The total amount of donations raised last year was $16,827.
The casino kicked off the radio-thon by becoming the first ‘Partner In Hope’ with a $240 donation.
“This is a very worthwhile charity and the casino was proud to be a part of it,” said Mike Tamburelli Presque Isle Downs & Casino General Manager.
A ‘Partner In Hope’ status was awarded to any organization or individual who donated more than $240 in a lump sum or committed to a $20 per month donation for a year.
As well as raising money by telephone walk-in monetary donations were also accepted at the casino clubhouse. There was also a silent auction that raised more than $1,000 for the charity. An autographed guitar signed by some of Country music’s top artists including: Miranda Lambert, Toby Keith and Tim McGraw sold for $700. All proceeds benefited the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
