About John F. Robyt, PH.D.
Dr. Robyt has over 52 years experience in the field of education. He is a Professor at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he has taught for the last 48 years. Dr. Robyt specializes in carbohydrate enzymology and teaches, consults, gives expert testimony and legal advice. He is currently teaching in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology. Dr. Robyt remains active in research, teaching and service to the University. His research activities include studies on the reaction mechanisms of various alpha-amylases and glucosyl transferases. He recently overturned a 70-year myth as to how starch is biosynthesized and has also found that dextrans and cellulose are biosynthesized by the same mechanism. Dr. Robyt has received numerous awards from prestigious national and international associations. He has published over 220 peer-reviewed papers, has 14 patents and has written 2 books. He is affiliated with the American Chemical Society. Dr. Robyt obtained a B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Louis University in 1958, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Iowa State University and a NIH Post-doctoral Fellowship from the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London, England. The concepts and techniques developed by Dr. Robyt are actively used today in the pharmaceutical and ethanol production industries. Dr. Robyt was born on February 17, 1935 in Illinois. In his spare time he enjoys coaching hockey.
