“As soon as we learned that our friend Kelly 'PensaKelly' Gordon had a virus with a rare and devastating side effect of transverse myelitis that changed her life drastically, we knew we would not sit back but instead to get busy finding ways to help her. She is known as a popular runner, walker and real estate industry personnel,” says Suzanne Bowen, Co-founder and Vice President of Elegant Group Inc, Super Technologies, Inc. co-founder, and TMCnet.com blogger and podcaster. “We are humbled by the level of PR, media and financial support for the Catch Me If You Can Age-Graded 5K (Pursuit) Benefit by the few sponsors, registered participants, anonymous donors, and volunteers to this point. We desperately need more. Because of the fluid buildup in the lumbar area of Ms. Gordon's spine, she has been paralyzed from the waist down and in the hands since March 2013. We are asking that more come together to help her become as independent as possible and to be the contributing community member that she craves to be. These are her dreams.”
The Mayo Clinic website shares, "Transverse myelitis is inflammation of the spinal cord, which often targets insulating material covering nerve cell fibers (myelin). Transverse myelitis may result in injury across the spinal cord, causing diminished or absent sensation below the injury."
The Transverse Myelitis Association President Sanford J. Siegel got involved with the Transverse Myelitis Association shortly after his wife, Pauline, contracted TM in 1994 at the age of 35. At the time of her onset, Pauline was a kindergarten teacher. Like Kelly "PensaKelly" Gordon, Pauline is a mother and grandmother. Pauline has has been in various states of relapse and remission since being struck with TM. Ms. Gordon, who the Catch Me If You Can Age-Graded 5K (Pursuit) is raising funds to help, wants to be able to open doors, cook, clean, finish her A.A., and volunteer for Pensacola charity activities. All these dreams can come true when enough people and organizations collaborate such as in the Benefit 5K.
