Pasadena, CA, October 20, 2015 --(PR.com)-- On the weekend of October 3-4, optometrist Dr. Brenda Lien volunteered her time to give free eye exams and related vision care at the Remote Area Medical Health Clinic, a 3-day event where hundreds of families received no-cost medical, dental, and vision care. Most of those patients are either un-insured, under-insured, unemployed, or simply cannot afford health care.

The clinic was held at Tarkanian Basketball Academy in Las Vegas, and was sponsored by Remote Area Medical (RAM), a non-profit, volunteer relief corps. RAM's big-rig trucks hauled in trailers full of medical equipment on Thursday, and the huge, empty gymnasium was transformed overnight into something that looks like an Army MASH unit: Wall-to-wall dental, medical, and vision testing equipment, exam chairs, and dozens upon dozens of volunteer medical personnel.

Because the clinic is run on a first-come, first-served basis, patients began lining up for numbers as early as 3:30 AM on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. At 6:00 AM when the clinic doors opened, the anxious crowds rushed in to finally receive no-cost general medical care, immunizations, dental care, eye exams, basic eye treatment, and eyeglasses. Organizers say they never shut their doors until every patient has been seen.

"It was a great privilege and blessing to volunteer and help restore sight to nearly 500 individuals over the weekend," said Dr. Lien, still cheerful and energetic after several long days of volunteer work.

Dr. Lien has practiced optometry at Linden Optometry P.C. in Pasadena for over 9 years, providing eye exams and vision care for both children and adults. She is a graduate of Southern California College of Optometry, and she became a Clinical Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry in 2010. Dr. Lien has been a Subject Matter Expert for the California State Board of Optometry and is a recipient of the PEN/Con-Cise Award for displaying a high degree of professionalism and commitment to the independent practice of optometry.

Remote Area Medical's mission is to prevent pain and alleviate suffering by providing free quality healthcare to those who cannot afford medical attention. According to RAM, "Many people live in fear of sickness and injury simply because they have little or no access to basic medical care. RAM responds to this need by providing free, quality dental, vision, and medical care to those who cannot afford it. In less than 24 hours we turn fairgrounds, schools, jungles, and arenas into mobile medical centers."

Linden Optometry P.C. recognizes Dr. Lien for volunteering her time to be part of the solution.

Dr. Lien's participation in the RAM Clinic was made possible by international non-profit Optometry Giving Sight, as a result of Linden Optometry being the #1 fundraiser in last year's "World Sight Day Challenge 2014."
