win.rar GmbH and RARLAB Release WinRAR 3.90

Improvements in compression speed and stability, by offering 64-bit Windows support and enhanced multithreading, are some of the major new features of the leading compression tool, which is now also compatible with Windows 7

Berlin, Germany, August 21, 2009 --(PR.com)-- win.rar GmbH and RARLAB has announced the release of the new 3.90 version of the powerful compression program and archive manager WinRAR. The most important news is the 64-bit Windows support. Furthermore the compression speed has been increased via advanced multi-threading and various improvements of the user-interface. The new version is already compatible with Windows 7.

WinRAR is well known for high compression rates, stability and all the advantages it offers associated with the RAR-format; these are: solid archiving, split archives, recovery records, self-extracting archives, archive conversion function and many security options. At the same time, the software runs smoothly and uses little disk space. In addition to the RAR-format, WinRAR also supports many other archiving formats, giving the user the utmost flexibility to work with archives and data compression.

“With the new 64-bit version, we are keeping WinRAR’s reputation as a state-of-the art technology,” says Öncül Kaya, managing director of win.rar GmbH. “Besides, we are also maintaining our traditional values, such as providing stable and reliable software, with continuous multi-format support. This combination of state-of-art technology and stability is very important for us and our users.”

64-Bit Version:
Keeping up with the latest hardware developments, the users of the 64-bit WinRAR version will have access to higher speed and better performance, when compressing and/or archives. This is possible due to improvements of the 64-bit processor architecture and the ever-increasing storage capacity, which WinRAR follows closely. Users working with large amount of data will especially benefit from the new 64-bit version.

Higher compression speed by improved multithreading:
In general one of the key aspects of the 32-bit and 64-bit WinRAR versions has been the speed enhancements: RAR compression speed is improved significantly for multi-core and multi-CPU systems. Thus WinRAR is able to use the available system resources better and more efficiently.

Even in the versions before 3.90, WinRAR has been automatically switching to multithreading, when the number of cores has been reported by the operating system as a number bigger than one. However, the speed advantage is significantly higher with WinRAR 3.90.

More options and faster access to context menu within the Windows Explorer:
The speed and the integration with Windows Explorer have been improved: The time between a right-click on a selected data in Windows Explorer and displaying of the context menu has been shortened – even if the user is choosing thousands of files, it is working very fast, without any delay.

Moreover, "Where to check for SFX archives" options group, in "Settings/Integration/Context menu items" dialog, allows user to control the processing of SFX archives in context menu. For example, if you frequently right click ".exe" files on slow network disks, you can turn off "Network disks" options to minimize the delay before displaying the context menu.

User-interface developments: Several improvements for experienced users
With respect to user navigation, WinRAR 3.90 is much more comfortable: the graphical user interface has been improved. The list of innovations is long here. Many new things can be found, especially related to shortcut and command line options. For instance, Ctrl+W key combination can be used to close the main WinRAR window, as well as the WinRAR viewer window.

There are changes in dialogs, which will be certainly recognized by experienced users. In command line mode, new switches, for example, for disabling recursion and file attributes, have been added. If you sort files by name in the file list, in WinRAR shell, WinRAR will use the new logical file name sorting, same as in Windows Explorer, considering digits in file names by their numerical value.

As usually: always running stable and using few resources:
The latest WinRAR version is running stable, as usually. The program has been tested with 5 beta-versions and now it is ready to meet the criteria of reliable and smoothly running software. Furthermore, it does not need more resources, hard-disk space or RAM, than previous versions.
