SMC Looks to Build on DOCSIS 3.0 Success with CableLabs CW72 Certification of the SMCD3DGN2, 8x4 Cable Gateway
Irvine, CA, February 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The SMCD3GN2 is a powerful and flexible gateway based on Texas Instruments 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 technology that offers residential and business class customers maximum wideband Internet access. Taking advantage of DOCSIS 3.0 technology, the gateway operates on up to 8 downstream and 4 upstream bonded channels supporting speeds of up to 320Mbps downstream and 120Mbps upstream. This robust platform provides the ideal solution for cable operators to aggressively grow their residential and business class customer bases.

The SMCD3GN2 is the industry’s first certified 8x4 modem with dual 48MHz tuners, supporting full RF performance in a 96MHz captured bandwidth, supporting cable operators who have challenging frequency plans with over 50% additional bandwidth compared to currently available products. The certification of the SMCD3GN2 has been achieved in part due to the efforts of Texas Instruments and their tuner partners Microtune and MaxLinear who have provided a consistent feature set of 96MHz captured bandwidth and added new features like dual tuners and improved power and performance.

“Residential and business class customers are demanding advanced broadband services requiring greater bandwidth not offered with DOCSIS 2.0 technology,” says Todd Babic, Vice President of Sales, Broadband Business Development for SMC. “We were first to market and continue to have great success with our DOCSIS 3.0 4x4 gateway, deployed by eight North American Tier One MSOs for both residential and business class services. The 8x4 certification is an important milestone and sends a clear and definitive message to our valued MSO customers. SMC will continue to be a market leader with the deepest product road map in the industry.”

Some key features of the SMCD3GN2 include support for IPv4 and IPv6, the next-generation Internet Protocol version that offers a large 128-bit address (IPv4 only offers a 32-bit address), which eliminates the need for network address translation (NAT). Other key features include compatibility with DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0, 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports that ensure maximum speed is delivered to the customer’s premise, and a wideband 802.11n WiFi radio offering download and upload speeds of 300Mbps. The SMCD3GN2 also supports up to 8 Multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSID’s), which allows the labeling of 8 unique WLAN’s. Customers can assign different SSID’s to maximize security and segregation of data by setting up a guest network, a home security system, segregated hot spots, and additional networks. Also, the SMCD3GN2 features easy installation by GUI, CLI, SNMP, TLV43/DOCSIS Config File or a downloadable configuration file to make it very easy and inexpensive to deploy the device in field with customers. The SMCD3GN2 also features sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) software that eliminates network congestion that is common from bandwidth-intensive applications like VOIP, IPTV, and online gaming. These features make the SMCD3GN2 ideal for deployment in residential or business class settings where customers have varied needs for network customization.

The SMCD3GN2 is now available for cable operators to test and deploy in field. Please contact SMC at 1-800-SMC-4YOU / 1-800-762-4968 to learn more about the SMCD3GN2 and our leading DOCSIS 3.0 products.
