Atlanta, GA, July 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Golden Key International Honour Society will host a panel discussion on the controversial Arizona Senate Bill 1070 on Saturday, July 17, as part of its annual International Summit. The discussion will be held at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz., and features three prominent figures in Arizona.

Serving as panelists will be Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County; Paul Knost, criminal defense lawyer; and Ben Miranda, House of Representatives District 16. Senate Bill 1070 is set to go into effect on July 29. A complete fact-sheet on SB 1070 can be found on www.azleg.gov.

“We thought it was important to bring together our international contingent of Summit delegates for an academic discussion on the pending immigration law,” Golden Key CEO John Mitchell said. “We believe the panelists will provide great dialogue on SB 1070 and our delegates are eagerly awaiting this session.”

As “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” Arpaio is known for the pink under shorts that he makes his more than 10,000 inmates wear. Other unconventional programs that Arpaio has instituted since 1993 are the nation’s largest Tent City for convicted inmates, male and the first-ever female chain gangs and the banning of smoking, coffee, movies and unrestricted TV, among others. He has also launched rehabilitative programs like “Hard Knocks High,” the only accredited high school under a Sheriff in an American jail, and ALPHA, an anti-substance abuse program that has greatly reduced recidivism. More information on Arpaio can be found on www.mcso.org.

For seven years, Knost has served as a criminal defense attorney, handling hundreds of felonies, misdemeanors and DUI cases in Maricopa County. He provides free consultations to people accused of felony and misdemeanor offenses and keeps affordable fees. Knost stands behind these three philosophies: every man, woman and child has the right to Due Process and Equal Protection under the law; all people are created equal; and everyone deserves a lawyer who is experienced and affordable. Elected to the Arizona State Legislature in 2002, Miranda has twice been selected by his peers to serve as Chair of the Arizona Latino Caucus of the State Legislature. In Nov. 2007, he was awarded the John S. Martinez Leadership Award by the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators. Miranda’s passion for helping the underserved led him to establish Proyeto Manzana, which focuses on immigrant issues. He devotes countless hours of free legal advice to people in the Arizona community who could not otherwise obtain legal services. Miranda received the City of Phoenix’s First Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Living the Dream” Award as his law firm contributed hundreds of hours and over $100K of immigrant legal services in support of Cesar Chavez of United Farm Workers. The panel is open to media and will be held in the Kierland Grand Ballroom located on the second floor of the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. Any media interested in attending the panel discussion should contact Carol White at cwhite@goldenkey.org prior to July 17 for details.
