Creative Classics Grows Furniture Business in Tough Economic Times by Thinking Small
Alexandria, VA, September 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Despite an industry-wide collapse of the Housing Market and the resulting effects on the Furniture industry, Creative Classics Furniture has experienced steady growth since they first opened their doors in September of 2000 in Old Town Alexandria.

While local and national furniture chains have been closing their doors in the Metro DC area during the last few years (Mastercraft Interiors, Workbench, Danker and Storehouse Furniture, to name a few) husband and wife team Scott and Rachel Hughey have built a following for their handcrafted, American-made furniture by tapping into a niche market: furniture for small spaces.

According to Rachel, “We weren’t open long before we realized that customers in Old Town and DC desperately need furniture scaled for town home and condo living. People kept coming into our store and saying, ‘I love your furniture, but does it come any smaller?’”

So, ever since the fall of 2000, the couple has sought out, requested and begged vendors to produce furniture that is scaled for smaller spaces, offers multiple functions and can be disassembled to fit through the tight doorways and staircases common in urban settings.

It’s a formula that seems to be working. “We started with very little money and a lot of hard work. In the beginning it was just the two of us. Scott and I even delivered the furniture ourselves!” says Rachel.

Now, in addition to a small sales staff, they have their own warehouse and delivery crew. And, sales at Creative Classics have continued to steadily increase every year while the furniture industry as a whole has seen a decline. “We’re cautiously optimistic about the current trend and are conducting business with an ever increasing eye on value and customer satisfaction,” says Scott.

This September marks 10 years in Old Town for Creative Classics Furniture and they are having a “Customer Appreciation Sale” to celebrate with savings on everything in the store all month long.

With all the success, any thoughts on expanding or opening another location? “No," says Scott. "We’re keeping things small. It seems to work for us.”
