Presque Isle Downs & Casino is Prepared for Improved Horse Racing Fields

Erie, PA, April 18, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Presque Isle Downs & Casino announced that two state-of-the-art barns have been completed that consist of 48 stalls apiece. The 1.3 million dollar project gives the facility a total of 668 stalls including a 48 stall receiving barn and a 24 stall stakes barn.

This new addition will potentially allow races to run with larger fields of horses. In 2010 race fields averaged 7.95 per race… in 2011 that number rose to 8. Property officials are hopeful the fields will grow even larger this year – though quality not quantity is the bigger concern.

“We are happy that we can accommodate more horses now,” said Mike Tamburelli, Presque Isle Downs & Casino VP and General Manager. “We hope the fields will be larger but more importantly to us is that we will continue to attract national-level competition.”

Currently the venue’s premiere race is the Grade II Masters Stakes. “Our races have featured horses that have gone on to win Breeder’s Cup races, such as Musical Romance, Informed Decision and Dubai Majesty. Gayego, who won the 2010 Presque Isle Mile and Noble’s Promise, winner of the 2009 Fitz Dixon Memorial Stakes here both ran the Kentucky Derby in their 3-year-old season,” says Presque Isle Downs & Casino Racing Director Debbie Howells.

“In a very short span we have gone from an ungraded race to Grade II, which is remarkable,” said Tamburelli. “We are now a major league sport.”

Other projects nearing completion are the installation of a small horse-themed children’s playground in the family picnic area and new landscaping.

“We really encourage families to come out and watch the horses run,” said Tamburelli.

As an added incentive to encourage families to come this year Tamburelli is bringing back “family night” on Wednesdays. “We will be offering $2 cheeseburgers and two hotdogs for $2 as well as $2 Budlight draft beer, and it is going to be a lot of fun.”

A free “racing basics” class will also be held on select Saturdays to teach racing fans how to select horses and place wagers. The classes will be taught by Ron Mullis and Katie Mikolay, co-hosts of the tracks simulcast show.

Live racing at Presque Isle Downs & Casino runs from May 15, 2012 until September 29, 2012. Post time 5:25 pm EST Tuesday through Saturday.
