The Pulis Family and Camp Thoreau, Inc. Continue to Support the Children’s Summer Camp Experience
Concord, MA, December 10, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Recently The Thoreau Club and Camp Thoreau was awarded The Family Business Association’s (FBA) Community Excellence Award for its philanthropic support and involvement in the Concord area community. Selected from over 400 nominations, Thoreau was honored as a Massachusetts family business leader for its community accomplishments and achievements.

Providing opportunities for family health and recreation while contributing to the community’s overall well-being has always been a priority for Thoreau. Over the past 60 years they have hosted fun family events like Camp Thoreau Day, organized Lifestyle Expos and Wellness Events, and currently sponsor and host Emerson Hospital Auxiliary’s 5k Run-Walk for Cancer.

As an acknowledgement of this award, the FBA will make a donation on behalf of Camp Thoreau Inc., to their charity of choice. They are proud to announce that the donation will be awarded to Camp Beech Cliff.

“It’s my honor and privilege to present our community excellence award to a camp that is not only part of our family history, but that is dedicated to serving the needs of local island families.” - Faith Pulis, President, Camp Thoreau, Inc.

As part of Camp Thoreau’s impressive history, a second camp, Camp Beech Cliff, was founded on Mount Desert Island (MDI) in Maine. From 1954 to 1979, Click Pulis offered a residential outdoor wilderness camp experience on Echo Lake. Swimming, sailing and backcountry canoeing and hiking were the primary activities for boys ages 7 to 15. Today Camp Beech Cliff engages over 500 MDI children in their summer day camp program. This past summer 83 need based scholarships were distributed to local families. The FBA donation will help to maintain camper scholarships in 2013.

Third generation family member, Faith Pulis had made it her mission to continue the Thoreau, Beech Cliff relationship. “Both camps share a common mission and commitment to build confidence, teamwork, leadership, positive risk taking, independence and resiliency among campers,” says Faith.

Camp Beech Cliff is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Camp Thoreau was founded in 1951, by Dot & Click Pulis, as a children’s summer day camp. For three generations, the Pulis family has created an environment where children are introduced to a philosophy of achieving one’s personal best while engaging in a variety of outdoor recreational experiences.
