First Documentary to Focus on Religious Conversion Nears Completion

Release of the new Pew Forum survey underscoring high degree of “faith switching” in America, stirs intense interest in the film Leap of Faith

New York, NY, February 27, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Documentary filmmakers Stephen Friedman and Tony Benjamin of announced today, that their new film, Leap of Faith is now scheduled for release early this fall. The 90-minute documentary follows the path of 4 American families as they struggle with a life-altering decision to abandon the faith of their childhood and opt for religious conversion to Orthodox Judaism. Filmed over a 3 year period, it is the first documentary to chronicle the process and the effects of religious conversation on children and extended families.

“The release of the new Pew Forum survey confirms our belief that religious conversation is one of the most important issues facing families today,” said Friedman. “Leap of Faith is a highly personal look at the motivations behind this phenomenon and the consequences that decision often brings. The survey highlighted that fact that over one-quarter of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another religion or no religion at all.

The feature-length documentary, "Leap of Faith," is the first ever cinema verite film to explore the phenomenon of religious conversion. The film takes an in-depth look at one of modern man’s more dramatic and difficult spiritual journeys: a journey that moves the voyager to forsake the religion of parents, abandon the traditions of childhood and enter into a wholly new, often radically different system of belief and practice of worship. In "Leap of Faith" we follow four families through their religious conversion from Gentile to Orthodox Jew. It is a decision that some will find courageous, others utterly absurd. We will witness a host of crises and triumphs and often surprising consequences. Seen from one perspective, our story is a story of ultimate devotion, from another ultimate betrayal.

Leap of Faith, a production of Humble Films, Inc. is funded in part by the Foundation for Jewish Culture’s Fund for Jewish Documentary Filmmaking (established by Steven Spielberg), The Hartley Film Foundation and the Helen Bader Foundation.
