Exclusive video footage of Occupy Boston – including interviews of participants, has been published to www.newsparticipation.com. With the contributions of protest participants and citizen journalists, this footage provides a unique, first-hand account from the middle of the occupation in progress.

The published footage is a broad collection of material that chronicles the height of Occupy Boston from behind the protest lines. One-on-one interviews with participants, offers viewers a glimpse of the diversity in the make-up of the people taking part in the occupation. One video clip captures the protesters engaged in marching, Chanting and Interacting with onlookers. Another video shows the protestors’ use of the village square gathering system in order to communicate during their General Assembly meeting. Yet, other videos show the workings of the camp from the camp kitchen to the power house where electricity is manually generated, to the medical center where medical assistance is given to campers who may need it. Viewed collectively, the videos capture the current experience of life at Dewey Square, the current mood of the individuals involved in the occupation, and the strong spirit of collaboration and belief in their cause that is keeping the occupation together.

“I want my children to be able to live in this country,” said Nancy, a protester, while giving her reasons for joining in the occupation, “and have jobs, and have some sort of reasonable environment.” “I do have a job and I have been fortunate,” says David Ruben another protester, “but I have heard many stories from my friends and acquaintances that it’s very difficult for them.” These two quotes from two of the interviewees show the diversity in the realities of the protestors.

Occupy Boston is an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street rally. Occupy Wall Street is a people powered movement for democracy that began in America on September 17 with an encampment in the financial district of New York City. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, The movement has vowed to end the monied corruption of American democracy. At present count there are countless Occupy rallies being held in cities from Boston to Houston. Occupy Boston was started on September 30, when a group of protestors gathered in Dewey Square. Today, Occupy Boston has taken over Dewey Square, its participant numbers having swelled to many thousands. Its mission is the same as that of its parent movement which is “to end the monied corruption of American democracy” – occupywallstreet.org.

NewsParticipation.com is an online community where citizen journalism is recognized and fostered.

The site showcases the work of amateur and professional journalists seeking an open forum for posting news dispatches and commentary. The site is also a vehicle for discussion about critical news topics. It is increasingly common for individual, first-hand accounts of breaking news to be shared online. However, these critical posts and conversations remain scattered across the web. NewsParticipation offers a single site where such works can be published, and where people can access information to educate themselves and each other on a broad range of contemporary issues.

The need for citizen journalism has become increasingly urgent. Mainstream media is often too closely tied to special interests to give fair and complete coverage to the important events of our time. Without unbiased information, the body politic remains under-educated, and unable to participate in a productive public discourse. This dearth of participation is contributing to a persistent ignorance about current events, and resulting in the deterioration of our representation in government. It is our hope that this forum will foster citizen engagement, and build a collective knowledge – free of mainstream news biases - that will ultimately enable people to directly influence government action.

We believe that when citizen journalists can come together, a common voice will emerge – one that will be difficult to ignore. NewsParticipation aims to be the united voice with which individuals can speak and, together, be heard loud and clear.
