Emerge Weight Loss Extends Compassionate GLP-1 Care to Adults Living with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

As landmark research shows tirzepatide can cut sleep apnea severity by roughly half, Emerge brings medically supervised, whole-person telehealth care to the millions of adults who wake up every morning still exhausted.

Miami, FL, October 27, 2026 --(PR.com)-- It happens in the dark, usually without the person ever knowing. The airway narrows. Breathing stops. The body startles just awake enough to gasp, then drifts back under, only for the cycle to begin again. For adults living with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), that interruption can repeat dozens of times every hour, night after night. The alarm sounds, but rest never really arrives.

Emerge Weight Loss emergeweight.com, the medically supervised telehealth provider built on a model of Care, Compassion, and Community, today announced that it has extended its GLP-1 care to adults living with obstructive sleep apnea and excess weight. The expansion reflects a conviction Emerge has held since its founding, and one that science is now confirming with growing clarity: GLP-1 medicine reaches far beyond the number on a scale.

“So many of the people who come to us say the same thing. They’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix,” said Dr. Sherryl Ashberg, Medical Director at Emerge Weight Loss. “They’ve pushed through it for years. They’ve been told to simply lose weight, without anyone showing them how. What moves us about this research is that it gives people a real path to address one of the root causes, with a care team walking beside them the entire way. That is what Emerge was built for. We have always believed GLP-1s go far beyond weight loss, and now we are watching the evidence prove it.”

A Quiet Epidemic Hiding in Plain Sight
Obstructive sleep apnea is among the most common and most overlooked chronic conditions in the world. A widely cited analysis published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine estimated that nearly one billion adults between the ages of 30 and 69 live with some form of OSA, including roughly 425 million with moderate to severe disease. In the United States, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimates that nearly 30 million adults have the condition, and that about 80 percent of them have never been diagnosed.

The toll reaches well past the bedroom. Untreated sleep apnea has been associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, along with daytime fatigue, brain fog, and a greater risk of drowsy driving. Excess weight is one of its strongest drivers: fat deposits around the neck, tongue, and abdomen can crowd the upper airway and make it more likely to collapse during sleep. For decades, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been the standard of care, and it remains highly effective when used consistently. But a mask holds the airway open only while it is worn. It does not change why the airway collapses in the first place.

What the Research Now Shows
That question reached a turning point in 2024. In the SURMOUNT-OSA program, two 52-week phase 3 trials published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 469 adults with moderate to severe OSA and obesity received either tirzepatide or placebo. Participants taking tirzepatide experienced roughly 25 to 29 fewer breathing interruptions per hour of sleep on average, a reduction of about 51 to 59 percent from where they began, compared with far smaller changes on placebo. Depending on the trial, 42 to 50 percent of participants taking tirzepatide reached remission or mild, non-symptomatic sleep apnea after one year, compared with 14 to 16 percent on placebo. Researchers also reported improvements in nighttime oxygen deprivation, systolic blood pressure, a key marker of inflammation, and patients’ own ratings of sleep-related impairment.

On December 20, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved tirzepatide, under the brand name Zepbound, as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and obesity. It was a moment an editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine had already framed as the beginning of a new era in sleep apnea treatment.

Far Beyond the Scale
Sleep apnea is the newest chapter in a story that has been unfolding across the GLP-1 class for several years. Medicines in this family have earned FDA approvals that extend well beyond weight: semaglutide to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity in 2024, to lower the risk of kidney disease progression in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease in 2025, and to treat a serious form of fatty liver disease known as MASH later that same year. Each approval applies to a specific branded medicine and patient population, yet together they tell a consistent story. These therapies are reaching the heart, the kidneys, the liver, and now the airway itself.

“We have heard it for years in the stories our patients share,” Calendrillo added. “More energy. Clearer mornings. People who finally feel like themselves again. The science is catching up to what our community has been telling us all along, which is that this was never only about weight. It was about getting your life back.”

A Measured, Medically Responsible Approach
Emerge is deliberate about framing this work with honesty. The SURMOUNT-OSA results and the FDA approval apply to brand-name Zepbound. Emerge prescribes compounded tirzepatide, prepared by a state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy using the same active ingredient; compounded medications are not FDA-approved and were not evaluated in these trials. GLP-1 therapy is not a replacement for CPAP, and Emerge advises patients never to stop or change their sleep apnea therapy without guidance from their own clinician. As their health changes, patients are encouraged to reassess their needs with a sleep specialist. Results vary from person to person.

Every Emerge patient is evaluated by a licensed medical provider who reviews their full health history before anything is prescribed, and dosing is adjusted over time under ongoing supervision.
