Martial Art Blue Ribbon Fight to End Malaria
Atlanta, GA, August 20, 2007 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday August 11th, the ongoing success of the Choi Kwang Do Martial Art Blue Ribbon Campaign to fight malaria was celebrated in Trenton, Michigan, USA at the Collins Choi Kwang Do School. On Saturday 21st of July Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International (CKD) students and instructors had gathered for a similar celebration at CKD’s Atlanta, Georgia headquarters. The next gathering will take place at a CKD location this fall in Florida, followed by London in April 2008 during the organization’s 20th anniversary week long festivities in the United Kingdom.

At the initial celebration in July, students and instructors gathered at the Choi Kwang Do headquarters for a special training session with the founder (Sahjonim) Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi, 9th degree Black Belt. The highest achieving students, who had worked extremely hard for three months collecting donations for the Malaria Foundation International (MFI) from neighborhoods, schools, malls, work places, etc. were invited to train with the founder. Mr. Gary Collins also traveled from Michigan to Georgia to participate in the festivities with his assistant instructors Mr. Andrew Pappas and Mr. Clint Wherner. Mr. Bill Hadley, head of the first professional Choi Kwang Do School in Wisconsin, was also in attendance. After the training session and photographs the festivities continued into the evening with a dinner banquet at The Classic Gourmet Chinese Restaurant. Sahjonim Kwang Choi, Grand Master Woo, and Malaria Foundation leaders Drs. Mary Galinski, Esmeralda Meyer, Cindy Korir, and Balwan Singh were present at the dinner to celebrate with the instructors and students who participated in this venture.

On August 11th CKD’s Michigan instructors and high achieving students had the same opportunity to train with Grandmaster Choi and meet with Dr. Galinski, the founder and president of the MFI. This event was also attended by all of CKD’s International Faculty members, including Mr. Robert Defayette, a senior CKD Instructor and school owner from Florida. Florida CKD schools are beginning their End Malaria - Blue Ribbon fundraising campaign this month, following the lead of Georgia and Michigan.

International Chief Instructor Charles Spence Jr. opened each ceremonial event by addressing the crowd, thanking everyone for the special dedication to the Malaria Foundation International and its Blue Ribbon campaign to End Malaria. Malaria kills 3,000 people each day. About 500 million people become sick in over 100 countries each year. Education is critical in fighting this devastating disease. The suffering can be reduced and lives can be saved with indoor spraying of insecticides, reduction of mosquito breeding sites, the proper use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, the rapid recognition of the symptoms, proper diagnosis by blood smear reading or rapid diagnostic tests and effective drug treatment. Fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are among the diverse possible symptoms.

Over $21,000 dollars have been raised to date by CKD to support the Malaria Foundation’s fight against this disease. Dr. Galinski expressed her admiration and appreciation for the organization’s special dedication and the strength and uniqueness of the CKD-MFI partnership. She has indicated that the funds will be used to support malaria awareness and educational projects beginning in Kenya, Botswana, Niger, Nigeria, and India. “We are supporting strong dedicated leaders in each of these countries and seeking others for the future”, said Dr. Galinski. “We aim to engage our youth and empower ‘Student Leaders Against Malaria’ around the world.”

Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International is committed to the Malaria Foundation International to help educate and bring awareness about malaria to the general public, while raising funds to help fight this widespread and deadly disease. Those who donate $1 dollar or more receive a coupon that can be exchanged for one month free of CKD instructions. The End Malaria - Blue Ribbon Campaign will be starting overseas shortly in Choi Kwang Do Schools in the UK, Malaysia, India, and Australia. “We are involved for the long haul”, said CKD’s executive and senior instructor, 7th degree black belt, Master Marshall Pereira. “We are eager to help eliminate this deadly disease, and we are involving our schools worldwide in this cause.”
